Policy around Liability, Acceptable Use, Copyright
and Plagiarism
Is your AUP up to date? Does it incorporate
the latest legal rulings and regulatory requirements? Does
it integrate properly with your general code of conduct and
disciplinary systems? Does it deal not only with students
but with staff, parents, and community members?
Are your Web policies sufficiently clear
and effective? Who has the authority to post new material?
Do you allow pictures (face or just backs?), names (just first
or just initials?), student work?
Are you sufficiently protected from liability
issues around data security, privacy protection, copyright
infringement? Does everyone in your school system knew and
follow the rules?
Are you prepared to deal with the crisis
and scandal that will someday - and inevitably - occur no
matter how well you run your system?
Digital technologies are a powerful tool
for learning, professional support, and effective administration.
But it is so new and so different from older media that school
districts seldom have done a comprehensive review of the policies
and procedures they need to ensure safe, productive use. The
needed policies fall into three general areas: those required
by law, those expressing organizational priorities, and those
establishing the context for individual or group usage. And
once you've established the needed policies, how do you make
sure that everyone knows the new rules and that effective
enforcement occurs? MNEP can work with your staff to review
your current policies and procedures, to suggest changes,
and to help design an inclusive process that gains support.
