Netday consisted of three statewide campaigns
in 1996 and 1997 that mobilized education, community, business,
and labor volunteers to help jump-start the wiring of school
buildings to create Local Area Networks (LANs).
Nearly two-thirds of the states school
districts participated in 1996/97. About 19,000 community
volunteers and hundreds of businesses donated nearly $35 million
in products and services. Union support was crucial. Both
teachers unions supported NetDay and the IBEW committed
to wiring every school in Boston.
Mass Networks was nationally recognized
as one of the most successful and visionary of the state NetDay
efforts, generating widespread media coverage, which significantly
raised public awareness of the value of education technology.
