IT in Higher Education: A Map for Momentum

What We Do

1. Objectives of the Mass Networks Strategic IT Planning Service

Align IT with institutional goals. We create a high-level strategic roadmap for campus-wide IT use based on an analysis of the gap between IT resources and academic and administrative goals.

Improve operational efficiency. We review technical infrastructure and IT operations.

Integrate IT with educational initiatives. We assess integration of technology in your institution's professional development program.

2. Methods. We use a variety of tools depending on the issues that must be resolved. Typically, to build strong consensus for change, we follow a three-phase, interactive approach:

A. Fact Gathering Phase

Interview stakeholders. We leverage our evenhanded approach to fact-finding in order to build credibility across the campus.

Survey existing documentation. We verify the history and current status of goals and plans for IT at your institution.

Survey IT infrastructure and operations. We catalog current IT assets and operations within the framework of institutional goals

B. Analysis Phase

Compare findings with peer institutions.

Summarize the extent to which IT assets and operations effectively support institutional goals.

C. Recommendation Phase

Develop recommendations for realistic short-term and needed long-term actions.

Link action plan to institutional goals to focus priority-setting and gain campus support.

Planning Ahead: Establish criteria for future evaluation and strategic plan modification.
