Accountability in Grading
In a recent article, the Washington Post reports that several schools districts
across the country are considering plans to make grading more uniform.
Researchers are concerned, in particular, about a seeming disconnect
between grades earned in the classroom and standardized test results. By
aligning report cards more closely with content standards, it is hoped that
teachers will be able to more objectively assess what students know in
specific subjects. While the research indicates that there is no ideal way
to approach grading, several experts say grading systems work best when
they assess only those things that are achievement-related.
