What Makes a Good Lesson Plan?
Mass Networks compiled this list to facilitate the discussion of criteria for excellence in lesson plans which took place at the December 10, 1998 meeting. The summary document Criteria for Lesson Plan Excellence describes the discussion and some conclusions developed by CLASP districts.

A good lesson plan:
  • Articulates goals and outcomes that can be demonstrated in the context of real-world problems.

  • Focuses on content outcomes, the process(es) students use, and/or the depth of student understanding.

  • Includes learning activities designed and organized so that authentic tasks are included for understanding those concepts/facts/principles which are used in the world outside the classroom.

  • Uses different representations (questions/examples/models/etc.) to present the lesson.

  • Includes planned social interactions that are appropriate for achieving the objectives of this lesson.

  • Describes motivational strategies that are appropriate for the content.

  • Accommodates individual learning styles and aptitudes through the use of multiple and appropriate media (graphic, aural and/or multimedia illustration).

  • Is factually accurate.

  • Enables students to actively construct knowledge and meaning.

  • =Includes clear criteria for evaluation of a student product.

  • Relates current learning objectives and content to past learning.

  • Sets up "checkpoints" to assess student understanding.

  • Summarizes lesson objectives at end of lesson to reinforce relationship between learning activities and concepts.
